Strengthening food systems must be an integral part of efforts to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and to build resilience in Africa, said African Development Bank Director General for Southern Africa, Leila Mokaddem.
Hunger is a greater threat to many Africans than the COVID-19 crisis, Mokaddem said in a session on sustainable food systems at the Southern Africa Impact Forum on 9 March.
“Africa must now urgently strengthen its food systems as an integral part of efforts to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and to build resilience,” she said.
The Rockefeller Foundation and the Food System Vision Prize Jan. 7, ahead of the first-ever United Nationsâ Food Systems Summit, announced its top 10 âVisionariesâ who offer solutions to complex food system challenges, including two India-based efforts.
The visionaries â named across six categories: environment, diets, economics, culture, technology and policy â will each be awarded $200,000 in recognition of their bold ideas for tackling some of the worldâs most pressing food systems challenges.
Among the winners were India-based Arakunomics and Eat Right.
Focusing on the regions of Araku, Wardha, and New Delhi, India, the Arakunomics vision empowers tribal communities and seeks to ensure environmental sustainability, fair profits for farmers, and food and nutrition security for all, according to the release.
Wageningen Team Awarded Top Visionary Title For Their Vision For The Dutch Food System 2050
Wageningen researchers Imke de Boer, Evelien de Olde, Kawire Gosselink and their team have been selected as one of the top 10 “Visionaries of the prestigious international Food System Vision Prize. Their team shared a holistic vision of a healthy and circular food system in the Netherlands in 2050, entitled ‘Re-rooting the Dutch Food System; from more to better’. The 10 winners will each be awarded $200,000 in recognition of their bold ideas for tackling some of the world’s most pressing food systems challenges.
The Food System Vision Prize was launched by the American Rockefeller Foundation, in partnership with SecondMuse and OpenIDEO. Over 1300 teams from around the world submitted their vision for a healthy and regenerative food system in a region of their choice for the year 2050.

These winners will each be awarded $200,000 in recognition of their bold ideas for tackling some of the world’s most pressing food systems challenges.
The Food System Vision Prize is sponsored by The Rockefeller Foundation and powered by SecondMuse and OpenIDEO. Winners were selected from a pool of more than 1,300 applicants from 119 countries who responded to the prize’s call for researchers, nonprofits, businesses, governments, and other groups focused on food system-related challenges to submit ambitious and attainable plans for regenerative, nourishing food systems by the year 2050.
