The threat of famine The Punch Published 7 July 2021 A recent newspaper report on Thursday, June 24, 2021 showed that 41 million persons are presently at risk of famine worldwide. According to the report, “The World Food Programme. . . warned that 41 million people in 43 countries “are teetering on the very edge of famine,” up from 27 million two years ago.” Conflicts, climate change, economic shocks and soaring food prices have been identified as the main drivers of hunger. Currency depreciation in many countries also contributes to the problem. The World Food Programme, an agency of the United Nations, said 584,000 people were experiencing famine-like conditions in Ethiopia, Madagascar, South Sudan and Yemen. Nigeria and Burkina Faso are also mentioned to be of particular concern.
