Overcoming COVID-19: World Leaders Must Finance a More Equal World to Beat Pandemics

Given the need to fund treatment and vaccines, there is pressure to scale back funding for social provisions. But doing so would prove a catastrophic and costly mistake. Instead, leaders must boldly finance a more equal world. The issue isn’t just that COVID’s impact is unequal; it’s that inequalities, especially gender inequality, hamper an effective recovery. They undermine the world’s readiness for future pandemics and shocks, and block achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Sino-US partnership crucial to shared future

[Photo/Agencies] President Xi Jinping s call to build a community with a shared future for mankind will have an even better chance of being realized, should the United States be ready to move beyond challenges and seize new opportunities. With its recent general election, the Capitol Hill riot on Jan 6 in Washington, DC, and the impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump behind it, the US must now transition from challenges, moving on to opportunities and new solutions. The nation should recall the words of then president Abraham Lincoln in his annual message to Congress on Dec 1, 1862, during the Civil War: It is not can any of us imagine better? but, can we all do better? . We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.. Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history.. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of Earth.

China s ESG leaders

China’s ESG leaders Aberdeen Standard Investments outlines five firms setting the standards for domestic peers to follow. As a global investor, we carry out environment, social and governance (ESG) analysis when we research companies for two reasons: (1) not to lose money; (2) to make money. We believe selecting firms with strong ESG standards improves our chance of avoiding loss-making corporate failures and scandals. We also see it as a way to generate alpha – or above-market returns – by investing in positive change at companies. Ultimately, we’re confident that progressive ESG policies will drive company returns and share prices over the long run.
