Govt to set up special cyber team for FIs

The government is planning to introduce a specialised computer incident response team (CIRT) for banks and financial institutions to prevent and tackle cyber threats.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) has already started developing the specialised unit and is expecting to complete the task by 2021, said project director of BGD eGov CIRT, ICT Division Tarique M Barkatullah.
BGD e-GOV CIRT is serving as the national response team with responsibilities to receiving, reviewing, and responding to computer security incidents and activities in Bangladesh.
Talking to the Daily Sun, Tarique M Barkatullah said the financial and telecom sector need special responses as the type of cyber attacks and the security modules is changing rapidly.

Sri Lanka has ranked 98th in the Global Cyber Security Index compiled by the UK-based National Cyber Security Index (NCSI).
Sri Lanka scored 27.27 in the index. According to the index published on the NCSI website, Bangladesh with a score of 44.16 is ahead of all other South Asian neighbours except India. Bangladesh has made a jump from 73rd to 65th place. In this region, Pakistan ranked 66th with a score of 42.86 and China ranked
80th with a score of 35.06. Nepal and Bhutan managed to secure 93rd and 115th positions with scores of 28.57 and 18.18 respectively.

Bangladesh has advanced eight notches in the global cyber security index measured by UK-based National Cyber Security Index (NCSI).
The country ranked 65th with a score of 44.16 among 160 countries in the index.
In the Index in 2018, Bangladesh ranked 73rd with an overall score of 25.97.
Bangladesh ranks second among South Asian countries and India is in the best position with an overall score of 59.74, and the index ranks 35th.
Among the other countries in the region, Pakistan is 66th, Nepal 93rd, Sri Lanka 98th, Bhutan 115th, Afghanistan 132nd, and Myanmar 139th.

Bangladesh has risen from 73rd to 65th place in the global cyber security index compiled by the UK-based National Cyber Security Index (NCSI).
The index was compiled by the NCSI to assess the countries preparedness for basic cyber attacks and their efforts in managing cyber crime and major crises, said a press release on Thursday.
The five-step indicators based on which the ranks are given, are: National Cyber Threat Identification, National Cyber Security System and Capability Identification, Selection of Important and Measurable Issues, Cyber Security Indicators and Development of Cyber Security Indicators.
