Political leaders vote in crucial general election

Political leaders vote in crucial general election Article by July 26, 2021 Prime Minister Allen Chastanet cast his ballot on Monday urging St. Lucians to go and vote while exercising caution due to the protocols put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Chastanet, who is seeking a second consecutive term in office, is leading his United Workers Party (UWP) into the elections that political observers here say is a tight affair and could result in the possible formation of a coalition government. His strongest challenge is coming from the main opposition St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP), which has nominated candidates for 15 of the 17 constituencies.

Wickham: Swing towards SLP in St Lucia elections

Social Share CASTRIES – The main opposition St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) was leading in most of the constituencies as counting continued following the general elections held here earlier on Monday. Political strategist and director of the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Research Services (CADRES), Peter Wickham, speaking on television here, said that the results seem to show a “significantly greater swing that I had expected from the ruling party. “As it stands now, the swing is in double digits and the United Workers Party (UWP) would have to do very well to try and contain that swing,” Wickham said, acknowledging that the SLP have been winning “in every singly constituency”.

Chastanet wins seat but losing government

Article by Social Share CASTRIES, St Lucia – Prime Minister Allen Chastanet comfortably won his Micoud South seat in Monday’s general election, but his ruling United Workers Party (UWP) is on track to relinquish the government after a five year term. Chastanet polled  2 204 votes as against 1  334 for Gideon Ferdinand of the main opposition St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) and  five votes for the newly formed National Green Party (GNP)’ candidate Melanie Fraites. The SLP, which was trounced 11-6 in the 2016 general election, seems to be on track to produce a similar result with the party leading in most of the other constituencies with former prime minister Dr Kenny Anthony among the successful candidates declared to date.
