When we see images of the Civil Disobedience Movement in Myanmar, we see the spectacular protests of hundreds of thousands of people pouring out into the streets of towns across the country. But we often forget that each person there, every person carrying a banner, every student giving the three-finger salute, every teenager singing a song for democracy has his or her own story of individual courage.
Every protestor knows the dangers he or she face. They have seen their friends being shot and killed. Every day people are arrested and tortured and yet knowing that arrest, torture and detention is a real possibility, they choose to fight for democracy in a country that has seen military rule of the most brutal kind in history of humankind.
CR-SEMA DG, Mr Princewill Ayim
Mr Princewill Ayim, Director-General, Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), says facilities outside refugees’ camp are overstretched due to the increasing number of refugees.
Ayim stated this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Calabar.
He said that the refugees were domiciled in various locations in the state, with three major settlements in Ogoja Local Government Area.
The SEMA boss said that Cross River is hosting 37,659 Cameroonian refugees in those camps.
He, however, noted that the refugees had enjoyed tremendous support from their host communities due to the sensitisation and advocacy carried out by the agency.

Rohingya people are numbered around one million in Myanmar at the start of 2017 are one of the many ethnic minorities in the country. Rohingya represent the largest faith percentage in Myanmar with the majority living in Rakhine state.
They have their own language and culture and say they are descendants of Arab traders and other groups who have been in the region for generations. The government of Myanmar denies the Rohingya citizenship and even excluded them from the 2014 census refusing to recognize them. The latest exodus began on 25 August 2017 after Rohingya Arsa militants launched deadly attacks on more than 30 police posts. At least 6,700 Rohingya adults including at least 730 children under the age of five were killed in the month after the violence broke out, according to Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).
