Humanitarian & Food Aid Can Never be Enough to Manage Cascading Disasters

Abdullah highlighted the numerous disasters that hit globally last year while the world was in the middle of the pandemic: destructive heat waves, wildfires, floods, storms, and locust outbreaks. “Humanitarian aid can never be enough to manage these cascading shocks that keep breaking down food systems and pushing people into food and water crises,” he said. He added that no matter how much improvement is made in food production, it will all be futile unless the issue of water security is addressed. “We can deliver food assistance but if farmers don’t have adequate access to water resources for food production, people will just continue being hungry,” he said. “And if people don’t have access to clean water, they can’t retain the nutrition they need even if we provide them with food assistance.”

EU and WFP partner to improve nutrition in Central Sahel by strengthening local food systems

WFP DAKAR/BRUSSELS – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the European Union (EU) today announced that they are partnering in an 18-month project to improve the production, availability and consumption of nutritious foods to prevent malnutrition among women and children in Africa’s Central Sahel region comprising Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. The project, backed with a contribution of €20 million by the EU through the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, will see WFP provide immediate assistance to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition while supporting the entire value chain for nutritious foods. The combined effects of conflict and climate change, compounded by the socio-economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, are disrupting food security and nutrition in the region. Close to 3 million children are at risk of becoming acutely malnourished across the three countries in the Central Sahel.
