STATEMENT: US Commitment to Cut Emissions at Least in Half by 2030 is Ambitious and Attainable

WASHINGTON (April 22, 2021) Today at the Leaders Summit on Climate , President Biden announced the United States’ new climate commitment under the Paris Agreement, which includes a target to cut greenhouse gas emissions 50-52% below 2005 levels by 2030. The new commitment nearly doubles the U.S emissions reduction target for 2025 set by the Obama administration.     The U.S. joins other nations that have already adopted ambitious near-term climate plans, including Colombia, the European Union, the United Kingdom and others. Last October, China announced it would peak emissions before 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2060.   Following is a statement from Manish Bapna, Interim President and CEO, World Resources Institute. 

DOF wants pedestrian-friendly cities

The Department of Finance (DOF) said that local government units (LGUs) should perform in transforming the country’s most congested cities into walkable, pedestrian-friendly communities. In a statement, Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III has underscored the key role of LGUs in creating green, safe and comfortable public spaces in their respective localities.  He then lauded the core convenors of the Green EDSA Movement for setting the example for LGUs and other sectors by spearheading the “green” makeover of EDSA, which was launched on Thursday, April 22, to coincide with the global celebration of Earth Day.  “I wish this Movement success in this brave effort to make EDSA a greener and therefore a kinder place for our people. May this be a shining example of an empowered people’s initiative to build a sustainable and healthier future for our country,” Dominguez said.
