War was on the agenda during the third day of The Davos Agenda in the form of action on climate change and the threat of conflict as a result of the pandemic.
Reflecting the day’s meeting theme, “Enhancing stewardship of our global commons”, leading figures gave a blistering warning of what will happen if world leaders and policy-makers fail to commit to a sustainable recovery from the pandemic.
“We are in a decisive decade for action,” says John Kerry, special presidential envoy for climate at the National Security Council (NSC), only days into his new role.
He focused on the race to make wholesale change and the fact that the Biden administration has placed addressing climate change at the heart of its policy and “is totally committed to this fight”.

JAKARTA (The Jakarta Post/ANN): President Joko Jokowi Widodo called for stronger global commitments to tackle climate change this week, but environmentalists are not buying it.
They complain that Indonesia’s emissions-reduction target has not budged and that national policies are still being pursued at the expense of the environment.
In a prerecorded statement aired at the 2021 Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS) hosted by the Netherlands on Tuesday (Jan 26), Jokowi said that the impacts of climate change were “very real” for archipelagic nations like Indonesia.

President Biden launched one of the strongest climate policy platforms in U.S. history with a series of executive orders yesterday.
The moves made addressing climate change a national priority on par with battling the pandemic and revitalizing the economy.
“It’s about workers building our economy back better than before,” Biden said before signing the order. “It’s a whole-of-government approach to put climate change at the center of our domestic, national security and foreign policy. It’s advancing conservation, revitalizing communities and cities and on the farmlands, and securing environmental justice.”
Since President Xi Jinping's pledge last September that China will achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, the Chinese government has followed up with a whirlwind of policies and announcements. These include regulations for a national carbon market, a policy on coordinating climate and environmental work and a policy on making financial flows climate-friendly. And much more is expected. China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment has announced that it will push for a climate law and a national emissions cap, peaking targets for provinces and large companies, the inclusion of carbon emissions in the environmental disciplinary inspections, and stronger environmental and climate standards for overseas investments.
