The parties to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC) celebrated on Dec. 12 the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement through the Climate Ambition Summit 2020, which gathered world leaders from 75 nations. The celebration was held online because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has also delayed the 26th Conference of Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, United Kingdom, to November 2021. The remaining question is whether the agreement can offer a breakthrough to reduce greenhouse gasses significantly (mitigation) and moderate the adverse impacts of climate change on vulnerable groups (adaptation). Efforts to achieve both mitigation and adaptation goals have become increasingly challenging in the post-pandemic era.
