Susan Aitken: We can now start to have real grounds for optimism

LIKE few others in living memory, 2020 has been a year we all want to put behind us. There is little that can be said about this most tragic of years that hasn’t already. It has taken a toll on all of us, on our communities and our economy, a harsh and cruel chapter which will be difficult to forget. Since the introduction of Lockdown in March I have used my Glasgow Times column to regularly inform and update readers on the city’s response to the Covid pandemic.  From support for our most vulnerable, our recovery plans, the measures put in place to assist business and allow citizens to safely get around, to our appeals for continuing government assistance, I hope this column has helped kept readers abreast of the vital work carried out by council staff and the wider Team Glasgow.

Transatlantic Trade: US and Europe - Week of December 7, 2020

Last week, the United Kingdom (UK) moved forward with its first inoculations of the approved Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The United States (US) approved the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine on Friday, 11 December, and will begin inoculations this coming week. The European Union (EU) continues to stress safety over speed in its vaccine approval process and has yet to follow suit. The UK sealed the deal on a number of Free Trade Agreements, while talks with the EU continue without any significant breakthroughs. Meanwhile, the UK and EU are also preparing for a possible hard exit scenario. This past week, Poland and Hungary reached a compromise with the EU on the custom union’s Budget and Recovery Fund, which will allow funds to flow at the start of the new year. The 116th US Congress, meanwhile, continues negotiations over a new COVID relief package, amid other priorities before adjourning.

OPINION: Can we rise from the COVID-19 ashes and win the climate battle?

OPINION: Can we rise from the COVID-19 ashes and win the climate battle? 14th Dec 2020    |    Source: The Commonwealth By Patricia Scotland, Commonwealth Secretary-General When 197 countries adopted the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in 2015, I remember feeling an extraordinary surge of hope – for multilateralism, for science, for humanity. Years of advocacy in support of small and vulnerable Commonwealth states had finally culminated in a binding pact to tackle the greatest threat to Planet Earth, together. No one expected that just five years later, a deadly pandemic would throw everything we had worked for into dreadful disarray. Now, as countries grapple with the debilitating impacts of COVID-19, it can even seem like the focus on climate action has diminished, despite the reality that the world remains far off course to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees.
