Home | News & Events | Ambassador McCarthy Welcomes First COVAX Shipment On Friday, March 5, 2021, the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines, donated through COVAX, arrived in Liberia.  Ambassador Michael A. McCarthy joined dignitaries from the Missions of the European Union, Germany, Ireland, Great Britain, and France, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator at Roberts International Airport to welcome the shipment.  Ambassador McCarthy gave remarks along with Foreign Affairs Minister Dee-Maxwell Kemayah, Health Minister Wilhelmina Jallah, Ambassador Hubert Jäger of Germany, United Nations Resident Coordinator Niels Scott, and National Public Health Institute of Liberia Director General Jane Macauley. 96,000 Doses of COVID-19 Vaccine Arrives in Liberia Format Arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine in Liberia © WHO Margibi, Liberia, 05 March 2021 - Liberia received 96,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses shipped via the COVAX initiative, a partnership between CEPI, Gavi, UNICEF and WHO. The arrival of the vaccines in Liberia is part of the historic step towards achieving the goal of equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines globally, in what will be the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history. This delivery is part of a first wave of shipments that will continue to different countries in the coming days and weeks. In addition to the vaccines, Liberia also received 97,000 syringes and 600 safety boxes that will be used for the administration and disposal of immunization waste.

This was announced today as part of a Joint SDG Fund US$41m portfolio to catalyze strategic financing to accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals. Uruguay is one of four countries, and the only one in Latin America, to be selected for funding. The UNIDO-led proposal for Uruguay, along with ones from Fiji, Indonesia and Malawi, was selected from 155 proposals from over 100 country applicants across the globe.
