Unemployment among KL s urban poor has doubled, says Unicef report

PETALING JAYA: Unemployment among low-income urban families in Kuala Lumpur has doubled during the conditional movement control order in December last year, says the United Nations Children s Fund (Unicef). Its Families on the Edge report, which is based on the third round of data collection conducted by the Families on the Edge project in December, involved 500 families with children living in Kuala Lumpur s low-cost flats. According to the report, it found that unemployment among heads of households had doubled to 15% in three months, with one-in-three adults found to be unemployed. It added that income levels among households headed by women and persons with disabilities (PWD) were now 24% and 36% lower respectively than at the end of 2019.
