China is vowing to counter a decision by the United States to lift self-imposed restrictions on contacts between U.S. diplomatic officials and their Taiwanese counterparts, while maintaining the unofficial relationship between the two democracies.

“The United States government maintains relationships with unofficial partners around the world, and Taiwan is no exception,” Pompeo said as he declared that all previous “contact guidelines” issued by the State Department involving Taiwan to be “null and void.”

Beijing With just days left for the Trump administration, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has lifted a nearly four-decade policy that unilaterally restricted official U.S. government visits to the democratic island of Taiwan. Pompeo faulted the policy as an attempt to appease the Communist regime in Beijing, adding for emphasis: no more.
The State Department quickly put the policy change into practice, announcing that U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft would visit Taiwan this week.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will not travel to Taiwan, the State Department said on Monday, after he lifted restrictions on American officials visiting the self-ruled island.
China on Monday slammed a recent decision by the Trump administration to end restrictions on diplomatic and military contacts with Taiwan and vowed to respond to the move with "a firm counterattack."
