Secretary-General Appoints Ján Kubiš of Slovakia Special Envoy, Head of United Nations Support Mission in Libya
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of Ján Kubiš of Slovakia as his Special Envoy on Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). This position is established pursuant to Security Council resolution 2542 (2020).
The Secretary-General is grateful for the commitment and outstanding leadership of Acting Special Representative Stephanie T. Williams of the United States in moving the political process forward in Libya.
Mr. Kubiš, who has served as Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL), since 2019, brings many years of experience in diplomacy, foreign security policy and international economic relations, both internationally and in his own country.

Recently, the Governor of Borno State, Prof Babagana Zulum, revealed that some foreign interests sponsor the Boko Haram terrorist group to recruit children as fighters.
He, therefore, urged Nigerians not to see the insurgency in the north-eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa as a northern problem but a challenge that affects everyone.
For years, there had been reports of children being used as suicide bombers by the insurgents.
In 2019, the United Nations Children’s Fund revealed that the insurgents used children to carry out attacks on Konduga town in Borno State on June 18, 2019. It said the suicide bombers killed no fewer than 30 persons in the triple suicide attack.

Sources in the UN Security Council announced that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, is considering nominating the Slovak Jan Kubis (Kubiš) to succeed Ghassan Salame as UNSMIL head.
The news was reported by the Tripoli-based official state news agency, LANA.
Kubiš, born in 1952 in Slovakia, is UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon. He brings with him many years of experience in diplomacy, foreign security policy, and international economic relations, both internationally and in his own country.
He served as:
Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), from 2015 to 2018
