One of the major initiatives in the developing world to address the social and environmental aspects of the COVID-19 crisis was taken recently by the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN). Established in December 1985, following a conference of African Ministers of Environment held in Cairo, Egypt, AMCEM’s mandate is to provide advocacy for environmental protection in Africa, to ensure that basic human needs are met adequately and in a sustainable manner, to ensure that social and economic development is realized

Lankan Envoy to Kenya presents ‘Letter of Credence’ Daily News (via HT Media Ltd.)
High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Kenya Kana V. Kananathan, who is also accredited as the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), UN Habitat and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), presented the Letter of Credence to the Director General for the UNON, Sahle-Work Zewdu at a virtual ceremony on January 14.
The UNON Director General appreciated the active participation of Sri Lanka in the UNEP and the UN Habitat organisational programmes and activities. He said that Sri Lanka was one of the lead countries in South Asia that is deeply committed to realise the objectives and targets of the UNEP.
