International civil society organisations demand that the Colombian government immediately stop its repression of the protests and guarantee the exercise of human rights, offline and online

Various Versión en español de esta declaración disponible aquí. /  Vous trouverez la déclaration en français ici. As international and Latin American organisations working at the intersection of technology and human rights, we firmly reject the violent repression in Colombia in response to the massive social mobilisations which began on 28 April 2021. Militarisation in Colombia’s main cities and the brutal repression on the part of the police and military forces directly threaten human rights and the well-being of civil society in Colombia. India travel ban: is it legal to ban Australian citizens from returning home?

On Friday, Health Minister Greg Hunt announced an emergency declaration under the Biosecurity Act, temporarily banning Australian citizens (and everyone else) from entering Australia if they have been in India in the previous fortnight. If anyone tries to circumvent the ban, they will face a fine of $66,000 or five years in prison. Australia is the only country in the world that has attempted to prevent, by law, its own citizens from coming home and the legal basis for this is in the act. The Biosecurity Act gives incredible powers to the government once a “human biosecurity emergency” has been declared. This can include “requirements that restrict or prevent the movement of persons between specified places”.
