New UN resolution reinforces link between human rights and the environment

In late March, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution that calls for a human-rights-based approach to conserving and restoring natural spaces. We speak with the Acting Director of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP’s) Law Division, Arnold Kreilhuber, to find out how the resolution will help safeguard the environment and contribute to sustainable development.

A letter by Republican senators calling for President Joe Biden s administration to reset its approach to Iran in negotiations over its nuclear program has accused the BBC s Persian service of being biased in favor of the regime in Tehran.
The BBC has rejected the lawmakers claim, which is at odds with United Nations s findings that staff working for the corporation s Farsi-language service were routinely harassed and intimidated by the Iranian authorities.
Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) is leading a group of four GOP lawmakers in expressing concerns that the U.S. could remove sanctions on Iran so it can re-enter the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Sadly, the Council’s function has rarely come close to matching its aspirations. Indeed, many observers believe it has made a mockery of its founding ethos.
The 15 countries elected to the UNHRC this past October include a number that are anything but icons in the protection and advancement of fundamental human rights. Among these are China, which both the Trump and Biden administrations determined has committed genocide against Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang; Russia, which independent UN experts accused of poisoning opposition leader Alexei Navalny; and Cuba, run by a government that continues to repress the fundamental freedoms of its own citizens. They joined other serial human rights violators already on the 47-member Council, most notably Venezuela, whose inclusion speaks volumes about the delta between the Council’s hyperbole and what it really represents.
