It’s the nature of politics to rally ‘round the flag when it comes to a party’s position on the major issues of the day. This is particularly true of Republicans who aspire to re-election or higher office and fear the wrath of you know who.
One way to stay on the good side of Donald Trump is an iron-fisted approach to illegal aliens, portrayed by the Grand Old Party as disreputable people possibly criminals who want to take jobs no Americans want. Rep. Doug LaMalfa can be counted among the believers.
He backed Trump’s call for the “big, beautiful” border wall that would be paid for by Mexico and cheered brass knuckles handling of those who dared cross the border. LaMalfa reaffirmed his position last month when he voted against HR 6, the Biden administration’s attempt to reform part of our broken immigration laws.
Voters surveyed by the Public Policy Institute of California were largely split along party lines with 79% of Republicans in support of the recall and the same share of Democrats in opposition.
When asked of all adults, regardless of whether they were registered voters, most previously have answered that they favored providing the benefit. In this poll, 66% of all adults answered affirmatively, a 12-percentage-point increase since 2015.
And for the first time, likely voters also agreed, and by a large margin: 58% to 39%.
In the 2015 PPIC poll, the answers were reversed: Only 42% of likely voters favored providing healthcare and 55% were opposed. In a 2007 survey, 32% were in favor and 63% opposed.

More than 300 agricultural organizations have come out in support of reforming the nation’s guestworker program, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act.
Advocates say it would help ease chronic shortages of farmworkers and give them legal status. The bill also gives undocumented workers and their families a path to stay in this country without fear of deportation, which means farmers would have a stable workforce for the nation’s food supply.
