Zoho tapped into the latent talent of rural and agricultural area as Vembu believed that talent in India is not the exclusive preserve of metros.
The only technocrat to be honoured in this yearâs Padma awards is Sridhar Vembu, founder and chief executive officer of the Chennai-headquartered Zoho Corporation, whose office productivity tools are taking on global brands like Salesforce and Microsoft in their own markets.
Vembuâs Padma Shri Award is a recognition, at last, of the quiet contribution that his company, almost a quarter century old, has made, to create a truly Indian brand in the fiercely competitive global market in office productivity software.
NEW DELHI â Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was among 119 recipients whom the government selected Jan. 25 for the Padma awards - one of the highest civilian awards in the country.
The Ministry of Home Affairs Jan. 25 announced the awards that include seven Padma Vibhushan awards, 10 Padma Bhushan awards and 102 Padma Shri awards.
The Padma Vibhushan, the countryâs second highest civilian award, has been conferred on Japanâs longest-serving Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the public affairs category. Tamil Naduâs veteran musician and playback singer S.P. Balasubramaniam also got the honor, albeit posthumously.
Indian American physicist Narinder Singh Kapany, best known for his work on fiber optics, has also been awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously.

Mumbai, Jan 25 : Six prominent personalities from Maharashtra, including two inspiring women, have been named for this year s Padma awards, on the occasion of the country s Republic Day.
Industrialist Rajnikant Devidas Shroff, the legendary founder and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of United Phosphorus Ltd, an Indian MNC founded in 1969, has been honoured with the country s third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan.
Shroff, 87, born in Gujarat and educated in Mumbai s Khalsa College, is ranked 87th on the Forbes list of richest Indians, besides being known as the country s Crop Protection King .

UPL completes pre-payment of $410 million senior notes ANI | Updated: Dec 30, 2020 12:09 IST
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], December 30 (ANI): Agrochemicals manufacturer UPL has completed the pre-payment of USD 410 million of 3.25 per cent senior notes due in October 2021.
The pre-payment, which concluded on December 28 was done using the cash on its balance sheet. This pre-payment is in line with its commitment to reduce debt, the company said in a statement. UPL is committed towards deleveraging its balance sheet at the back of strong business prospects and agriculture commodity prices, and favourable agronomic conditions.
UPL, earlier known as United Phosphorus Ltd, is an Indian multinational company that manufactures and markets agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, chemical intermediates and specialty chemicals besides offering crop protection solutions.
