Amid high pork and chicken prices, the Philippine government must now find a way to boost the production of alternative protein sources such as rabbit meat and plant-based food.
Based on a study published by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), the high pork prices now, while painful and unfavorable to consumers, is an opportunity for the country to start exploring alternative protein sources.

“In the short run, this will be chicken, but it should be expanded to other options (i.e rabbit) but eventually plant-based sources of protein (i.e soybeans and nuts),” according to the study prepared by the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics of the College of Economics and Management of UPLB.

The country’s chicken production went down from October to December of last year but it didn’t result in higher farm-gate prices, the latest data from Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed.
Based on the PSA data, the country’s total chicken production from October to December 2020 was estimated at 484.36 thousand metric tons (MT), liveweight, which is lower by 7.9 percent compared with the previous year’s same quarter output of 526.10 thousand MT, liveweight.

For the president of the United Broiler Raisers Association, Bong Inciong, the government, the pig farmers, and the poultry farmers do not seem to understand each other.
He said it is clear that the implementation of the price ceiling is a shortage of chicken and pork supply, but the DA insists that there is an oversupply of chicken.
“The stakeholders apparently exist in a different dimension… on planet earth, and the [DA] in the Marvel Comics Universe,” said Inciong.
“We must be able to increase the supply, help the consumer, without discouraging production,” he added.
For the president of the National Federation of Hog Farmers Chester Tan, the raw materials they use have no suggested retail price (SRP) or no price ceiling.

Amid shortage of pork, chicken supply
With African Swine Fever (ASF) still killing hogs and poultry raisers cutting on production after a bad case of an oversupply, the next best and affordable protein source of Filipinos might be eggs, which are in abundant supply.
United Broiler Raisers Association (UBRA) President Bong Inciong said a lot of hogs and broiler raisers have shifted to layer poultry farming or chicken egg production during the past months, pushing the supply of eggs high over the last weeks.
For hog raisers, the reason for the shift was ASF, while broiler raisers had to deal with an oversupply amid COVID-19 lockdown restrictions and the influx of poultry imports, Inciong explained.
