Almost two weeks after the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) recommended banks be allowed to reduce business hours and operate with limited staff, anxiety levels run high among banks employees with the Telangana government yet to give approval for the measures.
Compounding their worries is the unabated increase in number of people testing positive for COVID-19, including hundreds of bank employees and officers. The nature of their job, especially those manning counters at the branches, puts them at risk of contracting the virus.

Bank employees wait for implementation of a clutch of relaxations, mooted in the wake of a surge in COVID-19 cases, continued on Friday with Telangana government presumably taking time to study implications of such measures.
The matter is before the Chief Secretary, sources among bankers said, expecting the State government decision to be known soon. A decision on April 24, which is a holiday on account of 4th Saturday, would help banks plan accordingly from Monday, a source added.

The Indian Banks’ Association has asked banks to follow the Covid-19 pandemic related standard operating procedures (SOPs) it issued last year, whereby they will provide only essential customer services, business hours will be shortened, and employees will be called on rotational basis to break the transmission of the coronavirus in the second wave.
Under the SOPs, banks will continue to provide four essential services cash deposits and withdrawals, clearing of cheques, remittance and government businesses.
