Today in acquisitions: Manifold, Navotar, ShipperBee, FranchiseBlast
Over the past few weeks, four Canadian tech startups have been involved in acquisitions, including Manifold, Navotar, ShipperBee, and FranchiseBlast. Here’s the latest on Canada’s movers and shakers.
Torstar acquires Guelph-based ShipperBee’s parcel delivery business
Metroland Parcel Services, a subsidiary of Torstar, has acquired the parcel delivery business of Guelph, Ont.-based shipping software startup ShipperBee. ShipperBee declined to disclose the financial terms of the deal to BetaKit.
Following the deal, ShipperBee will retain its intellectual property, parcel transfer mailbox network, and its team.
Founded in 2018 and led by CEO Jim Estill, ShipperBee offers a local package delivery system for retailers that skips distribution centers in order to save businesses money and reduce carbon emissions by 75 percent.
Cuban Olympic gold medals sell for over $70,000 each at auction Monday, 25 January 2021
Olympic gold medals awarded to long jumper jumper Iván Pedroso and shooter Leuris Pupo have both sold for more than $70,000 (£51,000/€58,000) at an online auction as both exceeded their estimates.
The medal won by Pupo in the men’s 25 metre rapid fire pistol at London 2012 fetched $73,205 (£53,533/€60,290),, including the buyer’s premium, at the sale organised by the Boston-based RR Auction – a lot more than the $50,000 (£36,500/€41,000) predicted.
Pedroso’s gold from Sydney 2000, when he became the first man other than Carl Lewis since Moscow 1980 to win the Olympic long jump title following the American’s four consecutive victories, smashed through its $20,000 (£14,500/€16,500) estimate as it attracted a top bid of $71,335 (£52,162/€58,749).

A shipment of about 200,000 doses of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine will arrive in Mexico next week, a senior health official said Tuesday.
But it is not yet known when the doses may be administered because Cofepris, Mexico’s health regulator, has not authorized the Russian vaccine.
Juan Ferrer, head of the government’s universal health care scheme, announced the forthcoming arrival of the first of many shipments of the two-shot Sputnik V, telling reporters at a press conference Tuesday morning that the purchase “opens up new hope” for Mexico.
Gaming supplier Scientific Games Corp has told GGRAsia that its new “Jin Ji Bao Xi – Singing Cats” slot machine game (pictured) is “approved and available” in nine Asia-Pacific (APAC) markets, namely “Macau, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Saipan, Goa, Nepal and the Philippines”.
The firm said earlier in press release that the product was the fourth linked-progressive game in the “Jin Ji Bao Xi” family of games.
The casino technology supplier stated the newcomer combined “familiar sounds, symbols, and jackpot features that Jin Ji Bao Xi players all over Asia have come to know and love”.
The Singing Cats version has a new free-games feature called ”Repeat Win”, whereby any gold or jade coin that lands on a spin, resets to three the number of remaining free spins.
