Wednesday Freedom Kicks: 2020 MLS Expansion Draft results, Messi to Paris St-Germain rumors heat up

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports Happy Wednesday, everyone. Today is a big day, with MLS opening their free agency period and hosting its Waiver Draft, Concacaf Champions League will finalize its semifinals (with Atlanta United facing Club America, and Los Angeles Football Club playing Cruz Azul to see who joins Tigres and Olimpia), and there’s European league soccer in the afternoon. So, before all that, let’s catch up on yesterday. Danny Hoesen from the San Jose Earthquakes was the 1st pick in the 2020 MLS Expansion Draft for newcomers Austin FC. The Anthony Precourt-owned team also drafted Jared Stroud (New York Red Bulls), Brady Scott (Nashville SC), Joe Corona (LA Galaxy), and Kamal Miller (Orlando City). Miller was immediately sent to the Montreal Impact for $225K in GAM and the 11th pick in the 2021 MLS Superdraft. D.C. Unitedescaped the draft without losing a player, meaning they will have to make players eligible for next year’s Expansion Draft.

We’re now in the long, dark tea-time of the MLS off-season with the completion of last night’s MLS Cup title game. Before next season begins, we’ll have an expansion draft and the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, and several weeks of wondering when the next signing will come (followed by trying to find out more about the new players Luiz Muzzi has added to the squad), but that’s about it. I think I’ll be covering next week’s Concacaf Champions League matches at Exploria Stadium, so at least there’s that, but that’s not really the same as covering Orlando City matches. In the meantime, let’s get to the news of the day.

Both Union stars Brenden Aaronson and Mark McKenzie earned a start in Greg Berhalter’s squad and acquitted themselves well. Aaronson notched a goal and an assist while McKenzie helped secure a clean sheet while also scoring a goal that was wrongly called offside.
