A graduate of South Laurel High School is reaching new heights becoming a member of the newest branch of the United States military, the United States Space Force. This week Eric Merriss joined the military branch, something his mom, Sandra Russell, says is a big accomplishment for the kid who always had a love for space. After several years in the United States Air Force working with cyberspace technology he is moving on to become a Space Force Guardian. Russell says it all started right in Laurel County as he was a member of the South Laurel High School JROTC. The United States Space Force was created in December of 2019 but does not yet have a headquarters location.

MADISON, S.D., February 2, 2021 – “I love space,” said Gabe Lamb, a Dakota State senior majoring in cyber operations.
The Rapid City, S.D. native said he has always been obsessed with space, watching rocket launches and space exploration videos. When he learned that applications for the United States Space Force (USSF) Cyber Warfare Operations division were being accepted from members of the Air Force ROTC, he knew this was a significant opportunity.
A cadet lieutenant colonel in the DSU/SDSU Air Force ROTC, he applied for one of the seven slots available nationally. When he got the call that he had been chosen, “I had no words.”

Now, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has joined the party by creating a space court for settling commercial space-related disputes. On February 1, 2021, Dubai launched The Courts of Space initiative as a partnership between the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and the Dubai Future Foundation.
