Mr. President, dear colleagues, magandang hapon po.
I sponsor Resolution no. 613 with honor and with gratitude, but I also sponsor it with a heavy heart. Hindi ko inakala na sa pagbukas ng sesyon ngayong 2021, ang aking unang gagawin ay magbigay pugay sa isang sundalo, isang magiting na Pilipino, at higit sa lahat, isang tinuturing kong kaibigan.

Kleisner relieved Col. Andrew O. Saslav as the brigade commander.
Kleisner, a Savannah, Georgia, native and United States Military Academy at West Point graduate, previously served as the commander of the United States European Command Levant Future Operations Planning Branch. Kleisner is a father of three and married to Susan Kleisner.
“To assume command of 1st Brigade is an awesome mandate that I humbly accept, and I accept with excitement,” Kleisner said.
Saslav, the outgoing brigade commander, is a native of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, and a graduate of George Washington University.
Saslav, prior to serving as the commander of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, served as an operations officer in the 4th Infantry Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Faith in our American democracy depends on confidence in the election process and results. When confidence is shaken, so too is the confidence in our government and our leaders.
Even during the pandemic, West Virginia’s election laws and procedures gave voters confidence in our system of selecting leaders, and that confidence propelled the highest voter turnout in over half a century, and second-highest turnout in our state’s history.
While COVID-19 created challenges for every state, West Virginia was prepared. Beginning in 2017, we began building relationships with our 55 county clerks and conducting extensive training. We shepherded voter list maintenance procedures with our clerks, and to date, they have removed over 200,000 deceased, duplicate, and outdated records from voter rolls. Mike Ashdown, 56, of Highmore, SD passed away Sunday, January 10, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.
A private funeral service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore. A public graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m., Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the Highmore Cemetery, Highmore. A walk through visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 15, 2021 at the church. Masks are highly encouraged at all services.

Mike was born in Pierre on May 19, 1964 to Carl and Lilly (Duchene) Ashdown of rural Highmore. Mike attended elementary and high school in Highmore and graduated in 1982. He attended South Dakota State University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science.
