Hemphill named USCG District 1 Person of the Year
SOUTHWEST HARBOR U.S. Coast Guardsman Chrissy Hemphill, lead boarding officer at the United States Coast Guard station in Southwest Harbor, was recently chosen as USCG District 1 Person of the Year. She was honored at a ceremony at the station on May 4.
“Leaders look up and out. They go, what can I do better for the people that rely on me?” Command Master Chief Charles ‘Rob’ Bushey said during the ceremony. “It’s obvious you don’t do this job for you,” he said to Hemphill. “Taking care of your crew. Being part of the community. Being better, pointing out things we need to work on. That’s what leaders do.”
“Receiving this final major federal approval means the jobs, economic benefits and clean energy revolution associated with the Vineyard Wind 1 project can finally come to fruition. It’s been a long road to get to this point,” he added.
Since 2017, the Vineyard Wind 1 project has been through an unprecedented and exhaustive public review process that generated more than 30,000 public comments, more than 90% of which supported the project. The Construction and Operations Plan (COP) was reviewed by more than two dozen federal, state, and local agencies over the course of more than three and a half years.
The project design includes the GE Haliade-X, with a capacity of 13MW. The larger turbine capacity has allowed the project to reduce the total number of turbines from 108 to 62 while still delivering a total capacity of 800MW to Massachusetts customers. The turbine layout, which features consistent spacing of one nautical mile between turbines, was endorsed by the United Stat

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is proposing an expansion to its Seattle Base to make room for three new polar ice cutters over the next few years.

Feds Give Final Approval to Vineyard Wind
Citing an incredible milestone for Vineyard Wind, which became the first approved commercial-scale offshore wind project in the country on Tuesday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo signaled a veritable open season for similar projects that could eventually enable President Joe Biden to reach his climate goals. This project has been a long time in coming and it s really exciting that it s a reality, Raimondo said on a press call to announce approval of Vineyard Wind s construction and operations plan.
The 800 megawatt project s approval allows up to 84 turbines with minimum spacing of one nautical mile between the turbines. However, the project features the world s most powerful wind turbine, the GE Haliade-X, according to Vineyard Wind, which has enabled designers to reduce the total number of turbines to 62.

Irans Natanz Nuclear Facility Attacked Again
US Navy s Coast Guard vessels fired warning shots at Iran s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) boats in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US ships fired the shots at the IRGC boats after they closed in on the US vessels that were escorting guided missile submarine USS Georgia.
A Pentagon spokesman said the Iranian boats came in on the US ships at high speed and were just about 137 metres away from the US formation when the shots were fired. Earlier today a large group of IRGCN fast boats conducted unsafe and unprofessional maneuvers and failed to exercise due regard for the safety of US forces as required under international law, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.
