Fenton area mourns death of local icon

 The Fenton area lost a local icon Wednesday, April 21 with the death of Robert G. Harris Sr. He was 97 years old.  Harris, a lifelong resident of Fenton, had authored seven books on Fenton’s history. He also wrote the novel, “Many Come, Few Are Chosen,” about the U.S. Marines.  Harris graduated from Fenton High School in 1941. He went on to earn his Ph.D. and was the commencement speaker for the FHS Class of 1972. At the time, he was president of Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas.  In a 2019 Times story written by Vera Hogan (retired associate editor), Harris had said with the 150th commencement for FHS coming up in 2022, he would be willing to give a commencement speech again, if the school would have him.

More than 50 female Marines make history by completing grueling, three-day event called the Crucible

Female Marines are first women to take-on grueling, three-day boot camp called the Crucible at base in San Diego that used to only train men A total of 53 women trained in the first-ever coed company at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego  Their final task was to complete what the training base calls the Crucible, a mammoth boot camp which began on Tuesday and wrapped-up on Thursday The Crucible s tasks include target practice, an obstacle course, and a grueling 9.7 mile hike while carrying a 60 pound backpack

Marine Veteran, Centre Safe Volunteer Recognized with Penn State Outstanding Adult Student Award

Chioma Okoroafor is passionate about making a difference in this world through her work with veterans, victims of abuse, advocacy for healthcare in underserved communities and climate justice. Her steadfast dedication to pursuing her purpose is among the reasons why she is the recipient of Penn State’s 2021 Outstanding Adult Student Award. Okoroafor is a United States Marine Corps veteran, student worker in the Office of Veterans Programs at Penn State, a volunteer at Centre Safe and the Arboretum at Penn State. She is a junior pursuing a dual major in psychology in the College of the Liberal Arts and Biology in the Eberly College of Science at Penn State. Her concern about access to healthcare for underserved communities is setting her on a path with an ultimate goal of becoming a physician.
