Republicans trying to drive a wedge between Democrats and chip away at U.S. President Joe Biden’s support are zeroing in on the violence in the Middle East, laying blame on his administration and aiming to make his liberal critics the face of the party heading into the midterm elections.
GOP Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, both potential White House hopefuls in 2024, have focused in particular on Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and other progressives, who laid the blame solely on Israel for the current round of cross border fighting between Israeli military and terror factions in Gaza.
Following the reversals in guidance issued Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the White House that say fully vaccinated people to choose not to wear masks when indoors a group of over thirty House Republicans spearheaded by Republican Ohio Rep. Bob Gibbs sent a letter to Pelosi, demanding returning the House to normalcy.
“Speaker Pelosi, In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance released on May 13, 2021 we urge you to immediately return to normal voting procedures and end mandatory mask requirements in the House of Representatives,” the Thursday letter read.
“The United States Congress must serve as a model to show the country we can resume normal life through vaccination. Let’s follow the science and get back to work,” Gibbs’ letter concluded.
Did You Know: Uncle Sam Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - by Jerry Summers
Uncle Sam Although the colorful image of the patriotic bearded gentleman in his red, white, and blue clothing pointing his finger from a position and uttering the famous words, “I need you” in World War II no longer is presently applicable, the history of the adoption of said national figure is unique. An individual by the name of Sam Wilson of Troy, New York, who was a meat packer by trade, supplied preserved beef to the United States Army. He had joined the Revolutionary Army in 1781 at the age of 15 where his duties were to guard cattle, mend fences and package meats. After checking the meat for freshness, Wilson had the barrels stamped with the letters “U.S.” Although the letters stood for “United States” some soldiers thought it stood for “Uncle Sam.” Wilson and his nickname became connected to other Army supplies and Uncle Sam became a sort of mascot.
