USA U19 Women Will Face Tough Competition, Professionals This Summer

First step to competing against young, experienced international players begins with team trials May 14-16 in Denver
The FIBA U19 World Cup is one of the most difficult competitions on USA Basketball’s calendar, and this year likely will be no exception.
In the first three editions of the event, which was then known as the FIBA Junior World Championship, the USA teams, each of which featured future Olympians, finished no better than fifth place.
In 1997, the Americans broke into the medal standings in style – by defeating Australia in overtime in the gold medal game. From then on, the U.S. collected a medal at each competition, including seven gold medals (six in a row from 2005-2015), one silver medal in 2017 and one bronze medal in 2001.

Trials to select the 2021 USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Cup Team will feature two court coaches on hand to help the USA U19 coaching staff, including
Katrina Merriweather (University of Memphis) and
Teri Moren (Indiana University). Both coaches will be participating with USA Basketball for the first time, and selections were made by the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Committee.
Trials to select the 12-member team will be held May 14-16 at Metro State University in Denver.
The court coaches will assist the USA U19 coaching staff, including head coach

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit everyone in different ways. Some have had only to endure the inconvenience of community lockdowns. Others have lost multiple family members to the virus, or had their lives turned upside down through the loss of jobs.

Stefanie Dolson a two-time WNBA All-Star and key member of the USA Basketball program it was a bit more of a roller-coaster ride.
In March 2020, just as the coronavirus was becoming part of our everyday lives, Dolson and other family members tested positive.
“It was hard,” Dolson said. “When I got it and then my whole family got it, we got it right in the beginning. We got it literally right after the lockdown started, so we were getting the symptoms as the world was learning about symptoms, or we were getting symptoms before people knew about certain symptoms. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Arkansas signee Jersey Wolfenbarger will be one of 27 players vying for a spot on Team USA for the U19 World Cup, USA Basketball announced today. Invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Selection Committee. Trials to select finalists for the 12-member team, which will be coached by Cori Close, Aaron Johnston and Joni Taylor, will be held May 14-16 at Metro State University in Denver. The selection committee will be led by Jennifer Rizzotti, the president of the Connecticut Sun. She will be aided by Temple University head coach Tonya Cardoza, Duke University head coach Kara Lawson, and North Carolina State University head coach Wes Moore.
