A woman shot and killed by United States Capitol Police on Wednesday during an insurrection of the U.S. Capitol building by loyalists of President Donald Trump has been identified as Ashli Babbitt.
Babbitt was among insurrectionists who on Wednesday afternoon forced their way into the House Chamber, where members of Congress were sheltering in place. She was shot by a United States Capitol Police officer, the department said in a statement Thursday.
Medical assistance was provided to Babbitt, who was taken to a hospital where she later died, the statement said.

United States Capitol Police on Thursday said over 50 cops sustained serious injuries during Wednesday’s attack on the Capitol by supporters of US President Donald Trump.
Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund, who stated this in a statement, said the officers have been hospitalised.
Sund said the Capitol riot was the first in his 30-year experience as a law enforcement agent in Washington.
He said the police were investigating the death of a woman known as Ashli Babbitt. The victim was shot during the riot and pronounced dead thereafter when the rioters invaded Capitol during a joint session of Congress held to certify the electoral victory of President-elect Joe Biden.
