Centerville, Cahokia and Alorton Seek $22 Million To Fix Flooding, Sewage Issues

Centreville, Alorton and Cahokia have applied for a $22 million federal grant that local leaders believe would fix failed sewage systems in those communities. If the application is approved, the cities’ consulting engineer firm expects construction could begin next year and take about three years to complete. Residents in north Centreville, who have endured flooding and sewage issues for decades, are hesitant to get excited about what the grant award could do for their community.

Long-term exposure to low levels of air pollution increases risk of heart and lung disease

 E-Mail DALLAS, Feb. 22, 2021 Exposure to what is considered low levels of air pollution over a long period of time can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, atrial fibrillation and pneumonia among people ages 65 and older, according to new research published today in the American Heart Association s flagship journal Circulation. Air pollution can cause harm to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems due to its effect on inflammation in the heart and throughout the body. Newer studies on the impact of air pollution on health are focused on understanding the potential harm caused by long-term exposure and are researching the effects of multiple air pollutants simultaneously. Research on air pollution is critical to informing recommendations for national environmental and health guidelines.

Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Biodiesel Board Applaud Governor s Call for Statewide Biofuels Standard – Advanced BioFuels USA

(Iowa Biodiesel Board) Governor Kim Reynolds has introduced a bill to set a minimum standard of biofuels in the Iowa fuel supply. For biodiesel, this would mean most Iowa diesel would contain at least 11 percent (B11) during warmer months beginning in April of 2022, and B20 during warmer months in 2024 and later. The Iowa Soybean Association and Iowa Biodiesel Board strongly support the legislation (HSB 185) and applauded the governor for her continued leadership.  Grant Kimberley, Iowa Biodiesel Board executive director, issued the following statement:  “We fully embrace the governor’s call to set Iowa on the path towards using more biodiesel, and at higher blend levels. Setting a standard for widespread use of higher blends of biodiesel in Iowa would be positive for Iowa’s economy, environment and rural communities – and would improve the quality of the fuel supply overall.
