(Breeze photo by Jacquelyn Moorehead) SMITHFIELD – Three students will share the top of the class this year with two co-valedictorians, Maximilian Chelminski and Cameron Kasbarian, and a salutatorian, Victoria Richard, as Smithfield High School transitions out of its traditional class ranking system. SHS Principal Dan Kelley said the year was already challenging enough, and students kept the competition tight for top rankings. He said he was proud of the school’s top three, who persevered among a class of 165 students.

Barstow High senior Jamaal Willis accepted into Harvard and five other Ivy League universities

Victorville Daily Press For Jamaal Willis, the road leading up to finding out whether he’d been admitted into the college of his choice was an uncertain one. Although the Barstow High School senior had a 4.4 GPA and a plethora of extracurricular activities under his belt, he said Harvard University had given him no indication whether he’d actually get in. The school had conducted some pre-interviews with him and a high school counselor but nothing was set in stone. “It was just a lot of hesitancy and me trying to manifest an acceptance every day, so it was a tumultuous ride,” Willis, a Jamaican-American immigrant, said in an interview Saturday.

On Feb. 6, the USSYP Program notified me that I was selected as one of the two delegates to represent Montana in the 59th Annual United States Senate Youth Program. When I applied for the USSYP, I was selected as one of the one hundred four students from the fifty states, District of Columbia, and Department of Defense Education Activity. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, USSYP staff held Washington Week virtually on “the Zoom where it happens.” I could not even begin to comprehend the preparation and organization needed to host this event online, but I was overwhelmed at the incredibly smooth-sailing Washington Week Online.
