Joe Biden was inaugurated as US President on Wednesday, rounding off a chaotic election campaign and transition period. Mr Biden declared in his speech that democracy has prevailed after Mr Trump s efforts to challenge the election result. The Democrat appeared to swipe at his predecessor, saying: My fellow Americans, we have to be different than this. We have to be better than this and I believe America is so much better than this.
US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris along with their family members attended a prayer meeting at a local historic church in downtown Washington DC before going to the Capitol Hill for their inauguration. Biden and Harris along with their families attended Mass at The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. They were joined by bipartisan congressional leaders including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senator and JCCIC Chair Amy Klobuchar. Father Kevin O Brien delivered the homily. Violinist Patricia Treacy, soprano Rene Fleming and the St. Augustine Gospel Choir performed.
US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Wednesday arrived for the historic inauguration at the West Front of the Capitol. Biden, 78, will take the oath of office as the 46th President of the United States while Harris, 56, will be sworn in as the 49th US Vice President. Over 25,000 National Guard troops are guarding the venue and nearby areas to ensure that the nation s transfer of power can take place peacefully. Biden, who is set to be the oldest president in American history, will succeed President Donald Trump, 74, who has decided not to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Harris will take over the office of the US Vice President from 61-year-old Mike Pence.
Wyden optimistic ahead of a transformative week in government January 17 2021
With Joe Biden taking office and Democrats winning Senate control, Oregon s senior senator anticipates big changes.
Despite the challenges facing Washington County, Oregon and the United States, Sen. Ron Wyden is optimistic and eager to get to work this year, he told county residents at a virtual town hall meeting Sunday, Jan. 17.
Unable to hold his customary annual town hall meetings in person in each of Oregon s 36 counties due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Wyden has been conducting the meetings by videoconference instead. Sunday s town hall meeting was held in Washington County itself, at the offices of the News-Times in downtown Forest Grove.
