Trinidad and Tobago athletes miss Olympic qualification in Texas meet Asa Guevara - TT ATHLETES continued to vie for Olympic qualification with the track and field trio of Sparkle McKnight, Asa Guevara and Taejha Badal competing at the USA Track and Field Open in Ft Worth, Texas, on Tuesday. In the men’s 400-metre timed finals, Guevara was tenth overall in 47.07 seconds, even though he was third in heat two. American Micheal Cherry, winner of heat three, was first overall in 44.37. The Olympic qualification standard for the men’s 400m event is 44.90. In the women’s 400m hurdles, McKnight was sixth overall after placing fifth and last in the second of two heats. McKnight clocked 57.73 which was not enough to achieve the Olympic standard of 55.40.

The USATF did not give a cause of death, but the San Jose Mercury News reported that Evans suffered a stroke last week in Nigeria and had remained unconscious in hospital there.

Lee Evans death: 1968 Olympic gold medalist, world record holder dies at 74

May 19, 2021 USA Track and Field announced Lee Evans, a former world record holder and gold medalist sprinter, died on Wednesday. He was 74 years old.  His cause of death has not been announced.  Evans suffered a stroke last week in Nigeria and was unconscious in a hospital as of Sunday, according to the Evans won two gold medals at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City while competing in the 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay. He set world records in both events that stood for over 20 years. He was the first man to run the 400-meter dash in under 44 seconds and was inducted into the United States National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1983.

Nigerian Athletes Move Olympics Qualification Quest To USATF Open

  Nigerian athletes, Enoch Adegoke and quarter-milers Nse Uko Imaobong and Patience Okon-George will have another chance to beat the 10.05 seconds (100m) and 51.35 seconds (400m) qualification standard for the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday when they compete at the 2021 USA Track & Field (USATF) Open Meet in Dallas, Texas. The trio will lead a couple of other Nigerian athletes currently on training and qualification tour in the United States as the countdown to the June 29 Olympics qualifying deadline begins. Adegoke is the fastest home-based athlete this season with his 10.16s performance in January in Akure which topped the world list for a few weeks.
