State reports 55 new cases in Norman since last week

The 55 new cases since last Wednesday bring Norman’s cumulative case count to 14,209. This new case count is slightly lower than the previous week’s report, which showed 59 new COVID cases in Norman over the span of a week. The health department now updates its local COVID-19 dashboard and its statewide risk assessment map once a week.

Fayetteville NC doctor Benjamin Udoh settles Medicaid Medicare claims

RALEIGH – A Fayetteville doctor has agreed to pay $300,000 to settle allegations he fraudulently billed Medicare and Medicaid, according to the U.S. Attorney s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Dr. Benjamin C. Udoh, of Hanora Medical Center, an internal medicine practice that Udoh operates, is alleged to have violated the federal and North Carolina False Claims Acts by submitting false claims for nervous system testing. It is alleged that between January 2016 and May 2020, Udoh and Hanora Medical Center submitted the false or fraudulent claims when the testing services were not medically necessary and/or the medical record did not support medical necessity, a news release said.

Brazilian regulator rejects use of Russia s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine

Brazil s health regulatory agency (Anvisa) on Monday opposed the use of the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine citing insufficient data. Due to the lack of consistent and reliable data, Anvisa s Board of directors unanimously decided not to recommend the exceptional importation of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, it said in a statement. Fourteen of the country s states have already imported doses of the vaccines. Anvisa said it had no or insufficient data on the vaccine s quality control, safety and efficacy and that an inspection mission sent to Russia was also unable to identify the manufacturers of the biological pharmaceutical input used in the production of the Russian vaccine.
