U.S. Olympic swim trials split into 2 meets because of coronavirus
The U.S. Olympic swimming trials will be split into two meets, a striking change designed to provide safer conditions on the pool deck in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
USA Swimming announced Tuesday that a Wave I meet of lower-ranked swimmers qualifying for the trials will be held June 4-7.
The top finishers will advance to the main Wave II meet June 13-20 the already scheduled dates for the trials to determine who represents the U.S at the Tokyo Games.
Both meets will take place in a temporary pool at the CHI Health Center arena in Omaha, Nebraska, the trials host for the fourth straight time.

The United States Olympic swimming trials will be split into two smaller events in June as part of a shake-up aimed at protecting athletes from Covid-19, USA swimming said Tuesday.
A statement said that the battle for places on the US swimming team at the Tokyo Olympics would now take place across separate competitions in order to address concerns around athlete over-crowding.
USA swimming said the first trials event would take place on June 4-7 before a second competition held between June 13-20. The second event would be the sole qualifier for places to Tokyo.

USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States, in partnership with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and the Omaha Sports Commission today announced a revised plan and schedule for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming. The Olympic Trials will be divided into two competitions, with Wave I on June 4-7, 2021 and Wave II on June 13-20, 2021. Wave II will continue to serve as the sole qualifier for pool swimmers on the U.S. Olympic Team for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
