The coronavirus pandemic might not be the â big oneâ that experts have long feared, a World Health Organization official warned Tuesday during the global health agencyâs last virtual media briefing of the year.
Since the first reports of the novel coronavirus began circulating nearly a year ago, the WHO has repeatedly warned that the world must prepare for even deadlier pandemics in the future.

Further coronavirus restrictions are needed in England to prevent a catastrophe at the start of 2021, a member of the UK government s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG) said Tuesday. I think we are entering a very dangerous new phase of the pandemic and we re going to need decisive, early, national action to prevent a catastrophe in January and February, Andrew Hayward, a professor of infectious disease epidemiology at University College London, told BBC Radio 4 s Today programme.

The United States began a coronavirus vaccination campaign for its troops stationed in South Korea Tuesday as a third virus wave saw the host country record its highest daily death toll since the pandemic began.
US Forces Korea (USFK) administered initial doses of the Moderna vaccine for military and civilian healthcare workers, first responders and command staff across its medical treatment facilities in the country, it said in a statement.

TEHRAN, Iran Iran’s state TV says the first study has begun on the safety and effectiveness of a locally developed coronavirus vaccine in Iran.
Details about the vaccine’s production remained slim. Dozens are due to receive the shot in the hardest-hit country in the Middle East. The vaccine is produced by Shifa Pharmed, part of a state-owned pharmaceutical conglomerate. It’s the first in the country to reach human trials.
