Once in a lifetime dog aids Boone County Sheriff s Office

BOONE Sampson, with his sable-colored coat and jaunty personality, looks like any other lovable dog. He chomps on his leather tug toy and relishes chasing a ball. But the 4-year-old Czech German shepherd is a highly trained police canine who recently took third at state competition through the United States Police Canine Association.
While he had the fastest times, he was docked due to his erratic search style translation, going right to the hidden drugs, and not circling around the space first.
Sampson and his handler, Boone County Sheriff s Deputy Nate Benjamin, assist on drug searches and missing persons cases across the state of Iowa.

Who s got the best K-9s? 72 police K-9s from 20 agencies are in Pensacola to find out. Colin Warren-Hicks, Pensacola News Journal
A total of 72 German shepherd and Belgian Malinois dogs all law enforcement K-9s from 20 agencies in and around the Panhandle are congregating in Pensacola this week to show off their skills.
Every year, the United States Police Canine Association holds a regional certification competition in or near Northwest Florida, and the Pensacola Police Department is hosting the event this year.
Law enforcement K-9s are routinely recertified to stay up to code. During the certification process, K-9s undergo tests and perform challenges such as narcotics detection and apprehension drills before judges. The judges score the animals on their ability to complete the exercises and obey their human handlers commands.
