Islamabad on Sunday for the first time publicly acknowledged the efforts being made by the United Arab Emirates to bring India and Pakistan back on the table of negotiation, although New Delhi refrained from confirming it officially.
The visit of External Affair Minister S Jaishankar and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi to the United Arab Emirates around the same time lent credence to speculation over the behind-the-scenes role Abu Dhabi has been playing to bring the two South Asian nations back on the negotiation table.
Jaishankar reached Abu Dhabi on Sunday – just a day after Qureshi flew from Islamabad to Dubai to embark on a three-day visit to the UAE.

Taiwan was showered with attention in the form of high-level official visits during the administration of former United States President Donald Trump, leaving Taiwanese to wonder whether President Joe Biden would continue strengthening a bond between Washington and Taipei that benefits both countries but also angers Beijing.
Biden projected a strong signal this week by sending a delegation to Taipei led by former Senator Chris Dodd to affirm Washington’s commitment to Taiwan’s self-defense in the face of ever-present tensions with China.
Dodd told Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen the Biden administration would be a “reliable and trusted friend” to Taipei and would work to deepen the security partnership with Taipei.

Just months after the Coalition dumped Malcolm Turnbull, the new prime minister, Scott Morrison, went on Sydney radio to pour scorn on international efforts to prevent catastrophic global warming.
It was October 8, 2018, and a new report had just come out from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, saying nations must greatly increase their efforts if the world were to avoid warming of 1.5 degrees.

Two large-scale mining projects in Greenland are owned by Australian mining companies. Not far from Kvanefjeld is another REE deposit, for which Perth-based mining company Tanbreez Mining Greenland was granted an exploitation licence in February.
Tanbreez’s chief geologist Greg Barnes claims to have inspired former United States President Donald Trump’s notorious boast in 2019 that he would buy Greenland in the “real estate deal-of-the-century”. Trump’s boast was universally condemned in Greenland and Denmark.
There are about 90 large mining sites proposed in the south, all for open pit mines. They are all in the part of Greenland that is warm enough for people to live on and present a “huge threat to bio-diversity,” Hooge said.
