Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday said that Canada and some other nations were considering labelling China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims as genocide. In an attempt to justify his reluctance in calling out China for its treatment of Uighur minority, Trudeau said that the word “genocide” is taken very seriously by the international community and hence, it must be used only when it’s “clearly and properly justified.”
Addressing media in Ottawa, Justin Trudeau said that the international community took the term very, very seriously and must ensure it was only used when it was “clearly and properly justified.” He added that anything less threatened to weaken the term used to describe other past atrocities.

A Democratic Congressman has sued former United States President Donald Trump and his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani under the 19th century “Ku Klux Klan Act” for allegedly conspiring to incite the violence at the Capitol last month, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The post-Civil War law was framed to combat the violent acts of the supremacist hate group that targeted African-Americans.
Mississippi Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson’s lawsuit also named two right-wing groups – Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian economist, will become the first woman and first African to head the World Trade Organization. A Harvard University graduate, she says her mind is set on producing results that will “make Africa and women proud.”

GERD seeking fair international mediation
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has had a large international focus with reports about its advantages and disadvantages. In fact, the Project is quite big and is located in the highly sensitive watershed of the Nile Basin. This writer find it helpful to mention the many international efforts made in seeking mediation concerning the water dispute between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan.
According to the Egyptian Al-Ahram online News and the Global Construction Review (GCR), the Arab League met in Cairo on October 12, 2019 and expressed its extreme concern in support of Egypt’s position over Ethiopia’s mega dam on the Blue Nile River. Soon after, the Arab League sent a letter to the Government of Ethiopia to announce its position in favour of Egypt. Furthermore, the Arab League had warned Ethiopia on 23 June 2020 not to start dam filling before agreement is reached with the downstream.
