Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson expects the Big Ten championships to run as scheduled next month at the Bryce Jordan Center, though the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials had to be relocated from the arena.
Penn State and USA Wrestling announced this week that the 2021 trials would be moved from the Bryce Jordan Center in part because of COVID-19 protocols. Penn State is scheduled to host the Big Ten tournament March 6-7, which Sanderson said he expects to happen. We are working through to figure out how we could host the Big Ten [tournament], but we have every intention on making it work, obviously, Sanderson said Wednesday. All the athletes in the Big Ten are tested every day. We re testing every day. So there s not much more that we can do to keep everything safe.

Penn State’s Friday wrestling match opposite Iowa has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Hawkeyes program.
Both schools announced the news on Monday night. It‘s unclear when the meeting will be rescheduled, as Iowa has temporarily paused all in-person team activities.
“We are appreciative of the Iowa medical staff and respect the decision to pause activities,” Iowa coach Tim Brands said in a released statement.
”We will continue to follow Big Ten protocols and look forward to a return to training and competition.”

Instead, Penn State and the Bryce Jordan Center will now host the 2024 U.S. Olympic wrestling team trials.

Penn State said the event’s move comes amid a “variety of factors,” including current health and safety guidelines amid the COVID-19 pandemic and “the desire to provide the ability to accommodate all of the participants, staff, and fans.”
With COVID-19 cases surging in Japan and variants spreading globally, the last few weeks have seen a seesawing of headlines about the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. On one side, polls showed that more than 80 percent of Japanese respondents believe the Games shouldnât be held this year, and a British paper reported on sources stating that the Games would be canceled. Meanwhile, Olympic officials have stood firm that the global event will go on as planned, with athletes from 206 countries competing in front of fans.

Iowa Wrestling: Head Coach Tom Brands tests positive for Covid-19

IOWA CITY, Iowa University of Iowa head wrestling coach Tom Brands has tested positive for COVID-19. Brands tested positive during his regularly scheduled rapid antigen test Wednesday morning, followed by a PCR test to confirm the diagnosis.
Brands is asymptomatic and will remain home until Feb. 13. Wrestlers, coaches, and staff members are tested daily as part of the Big Ten Conference return to play protocols.
Iowa wrestles Sunday in West Lafayette, Indiana, against Purdue and Ohio State.
