A federal judge in Washington, D.C. has ruled that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) exceeded its authority in issuing a nationwide eviction moratorium aimed at protecting renters facing hardship in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a twenty-page decision,
1 U.S. District Judge Dabney L. Friedrich recognized that COVID-19 has created a serious public health crisis with unprecedented challenges for public health officials but nonetheless found that the CDC did not have authority to impose a nationwide eviction moratorium under the Public Health Service Act (PHSA).

Reta Mays, 46, was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Kleeh in the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia to seven consecutive life sentences for the murder of veterans at the facility as well as another 20 years on a charge of assault with attempt to murder for an eighth victim.

She originally pleaded guilty on July 14, 2020.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal
government, along with various states, counties and municipalities,
enacted legislation and rules regarding residential evictions. On
the federal level, Congress initially passed the Coronavirus Aid,
Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), which included a
120-day eviction moratorium that applied to all rental properties
that received federal assistance.
Within the first week of May alone, the laws on eviction
moratoriums have been upended in many different directions, and the
current status of these laws is unclear at best.
