League of Women Voters Greater Rockford: Mexican immigrants deserve protected status League of Women Voters The League of Women Voters Greater Rockford (LWVGR) along with the National League and the Illinois League urges the Biden administration to use its executive authority to designate temporary protected status (TPS) to the roughly 4.9 million undocumented Mexican immigrants living in the United States, thousands of whom live and work in the Rockford region. TPS designations are currently in effect for nationals from El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. In 1990, Congress granted the secretary of state the discretionary power to designate TPS to non-citizens present in the United States to address emergent humanitarian crises in their home countries.
