SLO County health department discusses vaccine distribution

–Local hospital workers and long-term care facility residents and staff will be among the first to receive a COVID-19 vaccination in a matter of days, according to the San Luis Obispo County Health Department. Due to limited supplies, the county is taking a phased approach to vaccine distribution over the coming weeks and months. “There is light at the end of this tunnel. A vaccine will be here soon,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer. “A safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine is one of the most important tools for ending the COVID-19 pandemic.” Two different COVID-19 vaccinations will be made available to some San Luis Obispo County residents by the end of December. The County Public Health Department will receive 1,950 doses in the coming days, which will be distributed to local front-line health care workers. Long-term care facilities should receive their first doses by the end of the month.

Due to limited supplies, San Luis Obispo County is taking a phased approach to vaccine distribution over the coming weeks and months. There will be two phases of distribution. Phase one includes the highest-risk individuals. This will include hospital workers, EMS personnel, skilled nursing facilities (staff and residents), dialysis centers, and ending with other essential workers. It also includes anyone who has high-risk medical conditions or is over the age of 65.

PHOTO / STEPHEN OTAGE Advertisement The United Nations has reportedly suspended “all non-critical external missions/visits”  to Uganda, citing security concerns.  In a December 12 internal memo to UN agencies and personnel, the Under-Secretary General for Safety and Security, Mr Gilles Michaud, noted that he had endorsed recommendations by Ms Rosa Malango, the UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, advising freeze travel to Uganda.   “The suspension will be lifted based on a revised security risk management process,” the memo by Mr Michaud reads in part.

The European Union and the U.K. extended negotiations beyond the Sunday deadlline, with the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreeing to go the extra mile in coming days to reach a deal. On the vaccine front, the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC, gave the approval for Pfizer- BioNTech s COVID-19 vaccine, following the Emergency Use Authorization or EUA issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Pfizer commenced first shipments of the vaccine to distribution centers across the country.
