Rallies in New Jersey, New York City celebrate President Joe Biden s immigration reforms, call for more action

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) On President Joe Biden s first day in office, rallies are being held in New Jersey and New York to both celebrate immediate action taken on immigration as well as to urge more reforms. In Newark, Make the Road New Jersey hosted a press conference in front of the Federal building to urge members of Congress from the New Jersey delegation to support the efforts and call on the Biden administration to cease what they call cruel and inhuman immigration enforcement practices and to investigate Department of Homeland Security practices. They praised Biden for delivering on a day-one promise to create a roadmap to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants, vowing a continued fight for their rights as human beings.

The League of United Latin American Citizens backs the agenda, which includes legalizing marijuana and repealing several laws. Other priorities include a constitutional amendment to protect voting rights of people convicted of a felony. Some state lawmakers also support some demands from the BLM Coalition, which is made up of Black Lives Matter groups from across the state. Waterloo State Representative Ras Smith, in particular, backs one of the demands to address the infant mortality rate which is three times higher for black women.
