Ash Wednesday services in Grand Forks region usher in Lent, amid the pandemic

Luke Meyer silently sprinkled ashes over the heads of the faithful during a service Wednesday at St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center at UND, marking the beginning of Lent. Ashes traditionally are used as a symbol to usher in Lent, a 40-day penitent period before Easter in Catholic and some Protestant churches. The ashes are made by burning palms from previous years’ Palm Sunday services.

Marilynn Martinson Edina – Marilynn J. Martinson, 85, of Edina passed away peacefully Jan. 6, 2021 at Mount Olivet Care Center. Private services were held Thursday Jan, 14 at Washburn McReavy funeral home in Edina, burial followed at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Marilynn Janet Anderson was born in Frost. She was baptized and confirmed at United Lutheran Church in Frost. She graduated from Frost High School and attended Gustavus Adolphus College. She married Robert E. Martinson and the couple resided most of their lives in Edina. Marilynn’s foremost joy was being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Her professional life was spent working as an executive secretary. Along with this, she spent many years supporting Bob in his home building business, with an amazing eye for Interior Design. Marilynn enjoyed watching all sports, especially cheering on the Minnesota Vikings. She loved her family and granddaughters, entertaining them with jokes, limericks and rhymes, and was proud
