By Lekpele M. Nyamalon Monrovia- April 6, 2021 will make it twenty-five (25) years since the infamous attack on Monrovia on Good Friday of April 1996. I was a refugee student in La Cote d’Ivoire when the news of a sporadic attack in Monrovia took the headlines of all major International Networks. In retrospect, then rebel leaders Charles Taylor and Alhaji Kromah attempted to forcefully enforce an arrest warrant for warlord and ULIMO-J commander Roosevelt Johnson.  Roosevelt Johnson was the leader of the breakaway faction of the United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy.  ULIMO was formed in May 1991 by Krahn and Mandingo refugees and soldiers in Sierra Leone, who had fought in the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL). From its outset, ULIMO was beset with internal divisions and the group effectively broke into two separate militias in 1994: ULIMO-J, an ethnic Krahn faction led by General Roosevelt Johnson, and ULIMO-K, a Mandingo-based faction led by Alhaji G.V. Will Face Trial in France for Crimes Against Humanity Share PARIS, France The investigating chamber of the Paris Court of Appeals confirmed the referral to trial in France of Kunti K., former Liberian commander of the United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy (ULIMO), for crimes allegedly committed during the First Liberian Civil War (1989-1996). Related Posts Apr 1, 2021 In November 2020, the investigating judge in his closing order had requested the indictment of Kunti K. for crimes of torture and barbaric acts. The Prosecutor appealed the failure to indict for crimes against humanity. The investigating chamber found in favor of the Prosecutor, by expanding the indictment to cover crimes against humanity in addition to crimes of torture and acts of barbarism that had been ordered by the investigating judge.

Judgment awaited in Alieu Kosiah war crimes trial 8 March 2021By Antoine Harari, special envoy in Bellinzona (Switzerland) The trial of former Liberian rebel fighter Alieu Kosiah ended on March 5 in Switzerland. Accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the early 1990s in Liberia, Kosiah denied being present at the time of the events and claimed there was a conspiracy. The victims did not matter to him at the time and they still do not matter today, replied the victims lawyers. A verdict is expected in a few weeks’ time.
