POP has sued over the OPC’s construction previously, and were unsuccessful in stopping it. The group has repeatedly said they are not opposed to the center’s construction, but believe that placing it in an alternate site – like in nearby Washington Park – was not seriously considered. They argue putting OPC in Washington Park would have a bigger economic benefit, a smaller historic and environmental impact, and provide better access to transit.
OPC construction would result in the cutting down mature trees, “permanent disruption” of important migratory flights, fundamental changes to the historic park and the closure and reworking of several roads on the city’s South Side.
