Disney-owned cable sports channel, (ESPN) has reached an expansive agreement to secure the rights to Spanish LaLiga in the United States for the next eight seasons (through 2028-29).
The deal set to kick off in August will see hundreds of live matches available exclusively on ESPN+. Although the financial implication of the deal was not announced, reports from the Spanish media and Insider Sport estimate the figure to be about $175 million per year for eight years which amounts to a grand total of $1.4 billion over the duration of the agreement. It was also noted that the contract now stands as the most lucrative U.S media rights deal for an overseas football organisation.
‘Ultraman’ Animated Movie In The Works At Netflix
Netflix plans to bring Ultraman, one of Japan’s most popular superheroes, over to America in a new feature-length animated story. The studio is partnering with Tsuburaya Productions to develop the picture.
Ultraman’s massive popularity is mostly confined to Japan, but the character has influenced well-known pop culture franchises including
Power Rangers and
Ant-Man. Currently, Netflix has an ongoing animated TV series starring the silver superhero, which picks up where the 1960s show left off. The Ultraman movie, however, will stand on its own with a storyline that incorporates the character’s mythology while introducing him to a new audience.
Disney confirms ESPN+ acquisition of LaLiga rights in major broadcast deal
The Walt Disney Company today confirmed that ESPN has acquired the U.S. rights to Spain’s LaLiga through 2028-29 in a comprehensive long-term media deal that positions ESPN+ as the number one dedicated sports streaming service.
Select matches will air across ESPN networks each season, with coverage and highlights also available on SportsCenter and other ESPN studio programs, as well as on ESPN digital and social platforms.
